In a troubling turn of events, both India and Pakistan have issued advisories to their students in Kyrgyzstan following mob violence targeting international students in the capital city, Bishkek. The incidents, which reportedly involved hundreds of local men attacking hostels housing Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi students, have prompted swift responses from the respective governments and diplomatic missions.
The Indian consulate assured that Kyrgyz law enforcement swiftly responded to the situation, detaining those involved to restore order and ensure the safety of all citizens. Foreign Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar advised Indian students to stay in touch with the embassy amidst heightened tensions.
Similarly, Pakistan issued warnings and established emergency hotlines for affected students, following reports of violence against Pakistani students. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern and offered immediate repatriation to any Pakistani citizens wishing to leave Kyrgyzstan amid the unrest. The government refuted social media claims of deaths and assaults on Pakistani students, asserting no confirmed reports of such incidents.
Tensions reportedly escalated after videos circulated on social media showing a confrontation between Kyrgyz and foreign students, particularly Pakistanis and Egyptians, leading to local outrage over what was perceived as a breach of hospitality. The Kyrgyz police have acknowledged the initial altercation and subsequent mob violence, deploying riot squads to control the situation.
Kyrgyzstan, known for its medical education opportunities and affordability, attracts a significant number of international students, including around 15,000 from India alone. The country’s medical degrees are recognized internationally, including by the World Health Organization (WHO), making it a popular choice for medical aspirants from various countries.
Despite the recent unrest, official advisories emphasize Kyrgyzstan’s generally favorable conditions for international students and affirm the country’s goodwill towards Indian nationals. However, ongoing security concerns underscore the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between students, embassies, and local authorities to ensure safety and mitigate risks in turbulent times.
