Reports emerged on Friday suggesting that Helmut Marko was under investigation regarding leaks related to the probe into allegations of inappropriate behavior by Christian Horner towards a female colleague. These reports raised concerns about the future of Max Verstappen, who shares a close relationship with Marko.
The allegations against Horner were dismissed, leading to the suspension of his accuser on full pay.
Marko has been overseeing Red Bull’s driver program since the team’s inception in 2005 and has played a pivotal role in signing notable drivers such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, and Verstappen.
As a motorsport advisor employed by Red Bull GmbH, Marko has been a key figure in the company’s involvement in Formula 1 for two decades and was a close confidant of Dietrich Mateschitz, the co-founder who passed away in October 2022.
Marko held discussions with Oliver Mintzlaff on Saturday before the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, describing the meeting as productive and dispelling rumors of any legal implications.
Regarding the possibility of suspension, Marko stated that there was no legal basis for such action and expressed willingness to work alongside Horner, emphasizing the need to resolve issues.
When questioned about Verstappen’s future with Red Bull, Marko mentioned the longevity of the contract but acknowledged the fluid nature of agreements in Formula 1, echoing sentiments expressed by Toto Wolff.
Mintzlaff, upon his arrival at the Jeddah paddock, emphasized his focus on racing and confirmed a positive discussion with Marko. He affirmed Verstappen’s contractual commitment to the team when asked about the world champion’s future.
Verstappen Stresses the Importance of Marko for Red Bull’s Future
Speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s future with Red Bull intensified after his father, Jos Verstappen, voiced concerns about the team’s stability if Christian Horner remained in his position following remarks made during the Bahrain Grand Prix season opener.
Following qualifying at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Verstappen addressed his Red Bull future, emphasizing the importance of Helmut Marko’s presence within the team.
Verstappen expressed his deep respect for Marko and his loyalty to Red Bull, particularly acknowledging Marko’s significant role in his career development. He stressed the necessity of maintaining the core team structure, especially in the aftermath of Dietrich Mateschitz’s passing, to ensure continued success.
In response to Verstappen’s remarks, Marko expressed gratitude for the Dutch driver’s unwavering loyalty and affirmed the importance of preserving the team’s cohesion. He acknowledged Verstappen’s sentiments, appreciating his commitment to the team’s stability and success.
