The annual showcase has unveiled the exciting roadmap for the Pokémon series in the coming year. Fans were thrilled to learn that the next installment, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, is set to launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch in 2025.
This revelation immediately sparked speculation among fans, who pondered whether the game could potentially serve as an early title for the rumored sequel to Nintendo’s immensely popular console. Despite no official confirmation of the new console’s release, widespread reports suggest it could hit the shelves as early as next spring.
Hints dropped in the trailer for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, including a mention of a “simultaneous” release and references to multiple “Switch systems” in tweets from the Pokémon Company, fueled further speculation. Some enthusiasts took this as a sign that the secrets surrounding the new console were starting to unravel.
The recent criticisms leveled at the series’ latest entries, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, for performance issues upon their 2022 launch, along with the controversial release of Palworld, described as “Pokémon with guns,” had led some fans to question the direction of the franchise. However, the announcement of Pokémon Legends: Z-A has generally been met with positivity from the community.
A tantalizing two-minute teaser showcased a computer-generated Pikachu traversing a wireframe rendition of a cityscape. The trailer then tantalizingly revealed silhouettes of various Pokémon enjoying themselves in settings like cafes, plazas, and riversides. The setting was finally unveiled as Lumiose City, with a majestic Eiffel Tower-like structure at its heart.
In the trailer’s climactic moments, a rainbow-colored S-shape, recognizable to Pokémon aficionados as the symbol for mega evolutions, appeared on-screen, igniting excitement among fans for this beloved feature that enhances Pokémon into super-charged forms.
Additionally, during the showcase, a new app version of the popular Pokémon Trading Card Game was announced, alongside updates to Pokémon Go and other spin-offs. However, the 2025 release date for Pokémon Legends: Z-A means that the Nintendo Switch’s release calendar is relatively subdued.
While recent releases like Mario Vs. Donkey Kong received generally favorable reviews upon their launch this month, and Princess Peach: Showtime! is slated to arrive in March, beyond remakes of Luigi’s Mansion 2 and the role-playing game Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Nintendo has yet to unveil further in-house titles.
Nintendo reports impressive sales figures, with almost 140 million Switch consoles sold since its 2017 debut, surpassing the reported 117 million PlayStation 4 units sold worldwide.
