At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona, OnePlus introduced its second-generation watch, the OnePlus Watch 2. This latest model boasts significant upgrades compared to its 2021 predecessor launched in India. Enhanced features include an extended battery life, a sleeker design, and improved functionality. Notably, the OnePlus Watch 2 operates on Google’s newest Wear OS 4 platform, offering users an optimized experience.
The original OnePlus Watch faced criticism for its limited operating system, and lack of third-party app support despite its commendable battery life. However, with the unveiling of the OnePlus Watch 2, OnePlus is revolutionizing the smartwatch experience. They’re introducing a unique hybrid approach, combining Google’s Wear OS with a minimalist RTOS. This innovation is made possible by a dual-engine architecture, featuring separate chips: the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 for Wear OS and the BES 2700 MCU for the power-efficient RTOS.
In a statement today, the OnePlus team emphasized the crucial role of Google’s support in updating Wear OS to accommodate the dual-engine architecture’s capabilities. This collaboration enables seamless switching between low-power and high-performance modes, ensuring a premium smartwatch experience while optimizing battery life.
Thanks to this cutting-edge architecture and a robust 500mAh battery, OnePlus guarantees an impressive battery life of up to 100 hours in “Smart mode” and up to 48 hours for more demanding tasks. Moreover, the watch can be fully charged in just 60 minutes, thanks to OnePlus’s fast-charging technology.
Drawing inspiration from the sleek design of the OnePlus 12 series, the newest OnePlus Watch 2 features a 2.5D sapphire crystal cover and a chassis crafted from US military standard MIL-STD-810H stainless steel. This combination ensures durability and a premium aesthetic. Additionally, the smartwatch is IP68 rated for water and dust resistance, providing peace of mind for active users. With a weight of approximately 49g without the strap and around 80g with the strap, the OnePlus Watch 2 strikes a balance between comfort and robustness.
The OnePlus Watch 2 boasts a vibrant 1.43-inch AMOLED display, offering a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels and reaching up to 600 nits of peak brightness for clear visibility in various lighting conditions. Under the hood, it is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 SoC, accompanied by the BES 2700 MCU Efficiency chipset. OnePlus utilizes the Snapdragon chipset for handling resource-intensive tasks such as running Google apps, while the Efficiency chipset efficiently manages background processes and simpler operations. Running on Google’s Wear OS 4, the OnePlus Watch 2 offers a seamless user experience with a single configuration option featuring 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
In terms of battery performance, the OnePlus Watch 2 packs a robust 500mAh battery. It promises impressive longevity, providing up to 100 hours of usage in ‘smart mode’ and up to 48 hours under heavier usage scenarios. Charging the device is swift and convenient, as OnePlus asserts it can be fully replenished in just 60 minutes using a 7.5W VOOC fast charger.
With an IP68 resistance rating and 5ATM water resistance, the OnePlus Watch 2 is suitable for swimming activities, offering versatility for users’ lifestyles. Running on Wear OS 3, it seamlessly integrates popular Google apps like Maps, Assistant, and Calendar, along with support for numerous third-party apps.
Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the built-in GPS functionality and the comprehensive tracking modes available through the OHealth app. With over 100 sports modes including badminton, running, tennis, and skiing, users can monitor various activities with precision. For runners, detailed metrics such as ground contact time, ground balance, and VO2 max are available.
Moreover, the OnePlus Watch 2 excels in sleep tracking, providing insightful analysis of sleep patterns. From deep sleep to REM cycles and even monitoring sleep breathing rate, it offers a comprehensive overview of sleep quality, empowering users to make informed decisions about their well-being.
The OnePlus Watch 2 comes with a price tag of ₹24,999 in India and will hit the shelves via major online platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart, Reliance, Croma, and OnePlus Experience stores starting from 12 pm on March 4, 2024, available for open sale.
Additionally, OnePlus is sweetening the deal by offering a ₹2,000 instant discount for purchases made using the ICICI Bank OneCard. Furthermore, customers stand to receive an extra ₹1,000 off if they link their device to the Red Cable Club between February 26th and March 31st.
