Underdog Triumph: Mystik Dan Shocks Kentucky Derby, Celebrity Spectacle and Thrilling Races Highlight Churchill Downs Day

In a surprising turn of events at the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, underdog Mystik Dan secured a notable victory, marking a career Triple Crown win for trainer Kenny McPeek.

Entering the Derby with a modest track record, Mystik Dan’s credentials included a third-place finish at the Arkansas Derby and a win at the Grade III Southwest Stakes. This triumph not only marked McPeek’s first Derby victory but also provided jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. with his maiden win at the prestigious event. Previously, McPeek had trained Swiss Skyliner, the 2020 Preakness States champion, and Sarava, the unexpected winner of the 2002 Belmont Stakes.

Mystik Dan’s journey towards the Triple Crown will continue on May 18 at the 149th running of the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore.

Before the exhilarating 12th race unfolded at Churchill Downs, the atmosphere was filled with celebrities and extravagant headwear, echoing the Derby’s tradition. Renowned singer Wynonna Judd delivered a stirring rendition of the national anthem, captivating a crowd that included notable personalities from the entertainment industry such as Sheryl Lee Ralph, Chris Tucker, Kid Rock, Jack Harlow, Jimmy Fallon, Travis Tritt, Josh Groban, Holly Robinson Peete, and Richie Sambora.

The event also attracted prominent figures from the world of football, including Travis Kelce, Aaron Rodgers, Jameis Winston, Isiah Pacheco, and Emmett Smith. Alongside the excitement of the Derby, spectators were treated to a series of high-stakes races throughout the day.

In a thrilling upset, longshot Trikari surged to victory in the American Turf Stakes, outpacing favorite Formidable Man in a gripping finish to claim the $600,000 prize. Gun Pilot showcased its prowess by clinching victory in the $1 million Churchill Downs Stakes, adding another accolade to trainer Steve Asmussen’s impressive track record.

The $1 million Turf Classic Stakes saw Program Trading narrowly edging out Naval Power in a dramatic finale, while Seize The Grey emerged victorious in the $600,000 Pat Day Mile Stakes. Chili Flag claimed the title in the $750,000 Churchill Distaff Turk Miles Stakes, and Vahva staged a remarkable late rally to secure the $100,000 Derby City Distaff.

Cogburn dashed to victory in the $600,000 Turf Sprint Stakes, capping off an electrifying day of racing at Churchill Downs.
