Kenya’s President William Ruto announced a tragic incident on Thursday, revealing that the nation’s defense chief and nine other senior military officials perished in a helicopter crash. Two officers, including the pilot, survived the crash.
President Ruto expressed deep sorrow as he informed reporters of the loss, specifically citing the passing of General Francis Omondi Ogolla. He described the deceased as “gallant military personnel” who were on board during the fatal accident.
The Kenya Air Force has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, which occurred in a remote area of Elgeyo Marakwet county, approximately 250 miles northwest of Nairobi. The helicopter crashed shortly after departing from Chesegon, where President Ruto and his delegation had been visiting a school.
Ruto paid tribute to General Ogolla, highlighting his distinguished service to the country. He declared three days of mourning starting from Friday, with flags to be flown at half-mast in honor of the fallen.
General Ogolla, aged 61, was en route to visit troops deployed in the North Rift area when the tragic incident unfolded. He had a decorated military career, having risen through the ranks to command the Kenyan Air Force.
The crash, reminiscent of a similar incident in 2021, serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by military personnel in the line of duty.
