Tragic Incident at Delhi Jal Board Facility: Man Falls into Borewell, Rescue Operation Underway

A tragic incident unfolded at a Delhi Jal Board water treatment facility when a man in his thirties lost his life after falling into a 40-foot borewell. The exhausting rescue operation, lasting nearly 12 hours, concluded with the recovery of his body. Authorities are still endeavoring to ascertain the identity of the deceased.

The circumstances surrounding how the individual gained access to the borewell room and subsequently fell into the borewell will be subject to investigation by the police. Water Minister Atishi expressed gratitude to the NDRF team for their unwavering efforts during the extensive rescue operation.

The ordeal began early Sunday morning around 1 am when the Vikaspuri Police Station received reports of a person falling into a borewell situated at a DJB plant in west Delhi’s Keshopur Mandi area. The borewell, with its considerable depth of 40 feet and narrow diameter of only 1.5 feet, posed a challenging situation for rescue efforts. Regrettably, the identity of the individual who fell in remains unknown.

Initial reports received by the police at approximately 1:15 am suggested that the individual might have been attempting theft at the Jal Board office before falling into the borewell.

Under the leadership of Inspector-in-Charge Veer Pratap Singh, the NDRF rescue team sprang into action, commencing rescue operations by digging a new borewell parallel to the one where the individual had fallen. The Delhi Fire Service confirmed the ongoing progress of the rescue operation.

Water Minister Atishi conducted a site visit to the Delhi Jal Board water treatment plant in Keshopur, where she assured appropriate action against the responsible official overseeing the sewage treatment plant. She was briefed about the ongoing rescue efforts by the teams on-site.

In response to the tragic incident, Atishi ordered an inspection of all borewells in Delhi within the next 48 hours, emphasizing accountability for the official responsible for the sewage treatment plant. She highlighted that the area surrounding the borewell where the incident occurred was securely locked, and the intrusion of the rescue teams was necessary to access the site. The police are actively investigating the matter to shed light on the circumstances leading to the unfortunate event.
