Nine people lost their lives and one individual sustained injuries following a tragic collision between a semi-trailer truck and a van at a highway intersection in Wisconsin, as confirmed by authorities.
The incident unfolded in Dewhurst Township, central Wisconsin, at the junction of Highway 95 and County Road J on Friday, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Reports suggest that the tractor-trailer, traveling eastbound on Highway 95, collided with the van, which was traveling northbound on County Road J, shortly before 8 a.m. local time as it entered the intersection.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the van was struck by the semi, resulting in significant damage to both vehicles, as observed in aerial footage from ABC Twin Cities affiliate KTSP. Tragically, eight occupants of the van, including the driver, and the semi-truck driver were pronounced deceased at the scene. The lone survivor, a van passenger, was transported to a local hospital for treatment, with their current condition undisclosed.
Authorities have withheld the identities of the individuals involved pending notification of their families. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers expressed condolences, acknowledging the sorrow caused by the fatal crash and extending sympathies to the affected families and first responders.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, with assistance provided by the Wisconsin State Patrol. Despite the extensive damage witnessed at the scene, both vehicles have since been removed, allowing traffic to resume.
