Toronto FC continued its remarkable turnaround with a 1-0 victory over a well-organized Charlotte FC in their home opener, courtesy of a stunning goal from Italian star Lorenzo Insigne.
Having finished as the worst team in Major League Soccer last season with a dismal record of 4-20-10 and conceding a staggering 59 goals, Toronto FC is now undefeated at 2-0-1 and has yet to concede a goal this season.
After securing a draw in Cincinnati and a victory in New England, Toronto has already matched its total road points from last season when they failed to win a single away game, going 0-13-4. With seven points from three games, they are closing in on a third of the 22 points they earned in 34 matches last season.
Captain Jonathan Osorio praised the team’s mental strength, stating, We believe in each other and we believe that we’re going to win the game, at some point. I think we have shown that in the three games.
Goalkeeper Luka Gavran, who kept a clean sheet in place of the injured Sean Johnson, credited the team’s improved tactical clarity under coach John Herdman for their recent success.
Although Saturday’s match was not particularly exciting, with both teams managing only three shots on target each, Insigne’s goal in the 80th minute brought the announced crowd of 26,345 at BMO Field to their feet. Insigne’s celebration, jumping into Herdman’s arms, epitomized the team’s joy and unity.
Head coach Herdman expressed gratitude to the fans for their support and acknowledged the significance of Insigne’s goal in igniting the stadium atmosphere. He said, “I think they felt we might be back. We’re getting close to it.”
Insigne, who has scored both of Toronto’s goals this season, continues to impress with his memorable strikes. His winning goal last week against New England was particularly audacious, a chip into the top corner.
The game also marked a significant milestone for Osorio, who made his 300th MLS regular-season and playoff appearance for Toronto FC, a club record. Additionally, it was the 50th appearance for Federico Bernardeschi in all competitions for TFC.
Despite missing Johnson and Richie Laryea due to injury, Toronto FC managed to secure the victory, with defender Nicksoen Gomis returning to the lineup.
Toronto FC will face NYCFC at Yankee Stadium next Saturday, while Charlotte FC will visit Nashville SC.
