Steelers’ Quarterback Conundrum: Learning from Past Missteps to Forge a New Path Forward

Kenny Pickett’s tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers came to an end 687 days after he was drafted as the No. 20 pick. Despite being introduced as the quarterback who shattered Dan Marino’s college records, Pickett’s departure, traded to Philadelphia, marked a significant shift for the organization.

The Steelers, known for their traditional and loyal approach, found themselves in a predicament exacerbated by their failure to plan for life after Ben Roethlisberger. Instead of grooming a successor, they clung to past glory, reluctant to embrace change.

With Pickett’s discontent over the signing of Russell Wilson, the Steelers realized their misstep. They had neglected to cultivate a clear succession plan, relying instead on makeshift solutions. Wilson’s arrival, while not a complete reset, offers stability as a seasoned quarterback, albeit past his prime.

This move echoes what the Steelers should have pursued earlier, avoiding desperation in drafting Pickett amidst a lackluster quarterback class. Their mishandling of the situation became apparent when they signed Mitch Trubisky, only to draft Pickett soon after, undercutting Trubisky’s position.

The Steelers’ failure to invest significant draft capital in the quarterback position earlier led to a series of missed opportunities. While they had Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins, they lacked foresight in developing young talent.

Pickett’s brief stint as a starter yielded mixed results, ultimately ending with his departure. However, this presents an opportunity for the Steelers to chart a new course. By shedding the burden of a disappointing first-round pick, they can focus on building a stronger future.

General Manager Omar Khan has shown willingness to break from tradition, pursuing big-name signings and trades. With Pickett gone, the Steelers can explore options like acquiring Justin Fields, signaling a departure from their previous stance.

In hindsight, the Steelers’ reluctance to adapt hindered their progress. But with Pickett’s exit, they have a chance to forge a clearer path forward, unencumbered by past mistakes.
