Australian women’s soccer star Sam Kerr has been charged with allegedly racially aggravated harassment of a police officer, according to the Metropolitan Police. Kerr received a court summons on January 21st, following an incident involving a police officer in Twickenham on January 30, 2023. The Matildas captain appeared in court in London, where she pleaded not guilty. Her trial is scheduled for February 2025.
Kerr, a prominent figure in Australian sports, plays for Chelsea in England’s Women’s Super League but is currently sidelined with a knee injury. Despite her injury, she has scored 58 goals for Chelsea since joining in 2020 and has found the net 69 times in 128 appearances for the Matildas.
Football Australia stated that they are aware of the legal proceedings but cannot comment further due to the ongoing nature of the case. Kerr, who has captained the Matildas since 2019, has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including winning the Golden Boot award in three different continents and becoming Australia’s highest-scoring player in January 2022.
In recognition of her achievements, the Western Australia State Football Centre was renamed the Sam Kerr Football Centre last October. However, Kerr has been sidelined by an ACL injury since January, ruling her out of the Paris Olympics, which the Matildas recently qualified for.
