The Ministry of Defence in Singapore has reported that an F-16 jet from the Singapore Air Force crashed during takeoff at a military airbase on Wednesday. The incident occurred around 12:35 pm when the aircraft encountered an issue during its takeoff procedure. Fortunately, the pilot managed to eject safely, and the plane subsequently crashed within Tengah Air Base. The pilot, who remained conscious, is currently receiving medical attention and is able to walk, with no other personnel sustaining injuries.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the Ministry of Defence promising to provide updates as soon as they are available. This occurrence is rare for Singapore, known for its highly advanced air force in Southeast Asia, which has operated the F-16 for over three decades.
In a tragic incident back in May 2004, during a night training mission in Arizona, an RSAF F-16C aircraft crashed, resulting in the loss of the 25-year-old Singaporean pilot. An inquiry board attributed the incident to human factors, suggesting potential gravity-induced loss of consciousness or spatial disorientation.
Singapore has recently upgraded its F-16 fleet to enhance capabilities and ensure operational readiness until the mid-2030s. These upgrades include integrating Active Electronically Scanned Array Radar, enabling the F-16 to engage multiple targets at extended ranges, and enhancing ground-attack capabilities for precision strikes using advanced munitions.
Moreover, Singapore announced plans to acquire eight F-35A jets in February, complementing its previous order of 12 F-35 jets of the “B” variant. These new acquisitions are intended to replace the aging F-16 fleet and further bolster Singapore’s air defense capabilities.
