Shubman Gill Makes IPL History: Youngest Captain Surpasses Virat Kohli’s Milestone with 3000 Runs

Shubman Gill, the youngest captain in the IPL 2024 season, solidified his position in cricket history once again as he achieved a remarkable milestone, surpassing his idol Virat Kohli. Leading the Gujarat Titans in a thrilling encounter against the Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Gill etched his name in the record books by crossing the 3000-run mark in the prestigious Indian Premier League.

Gill’s outstanding performance didn’t stop there. Guiding his team in a challenging 197-run chase against the formidable Royals, the talented batsman showcased exemplary leadership by scoring a crucial 72 runs off just 44 deliveries, embellished with 6 boundaries and 2 sixes.

At a mere 24 years of age, Gill’s achievement as the youngest batter to achieve 3000 runs in the IPL is particularly significant, as he surpassed Kohli, who held the title for several years, achieving the milestone at the age of 26 years and 186 days.

Having commenced his IPL journey with the Kolkata Knight Riders before joining the Titans in 2022, Gill’s ascent in the league has been nothing short of remarkable. His tenure with the Titans saw him secure the title in his debut season, and despite ending up as the runner-up in the previous season, Gill emerged as the recipient of the coveted Orange Cap. This season, however, marks his debut as captain of an IPL franchise, a role he has embraced with vigor and determination.

Gill’s journey to 3000 runs in the IPL was swift, taking just 94 innings, making him the second quickest Indian to achieve this feat after KL Rahul, who accomplished it in 80 innings.

In the match against the Royals, Gill’s strategic decision to bowl first, despite a delayed toss due to drizzle, exemplified his tactical acumen. Despite a strong start from the Titans, the Royals’ Riyan Parag and skipper Sanju Samson turned the tide with aggressive half-centuries, propelling their team to a formidable total of 196 for three. Despite the challenge, Gill’s leadership shone through as he and his team put up a valiant effort in the pursuit of victory.
