Two individuals tragically lost their lives after being struck by a train in Jharkhand’s Jamtara district on February 28th, as confirmed by local authorities.
Mujibur Rahman, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Jamtara, informed PTI that the incident occurred near Kaljharia, approximately 140 km from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. “So far, the bodies of two individuals have been recovered. However, a search operation is ongoing, and the casualty count may rise,” he stated.
Railway officials reported that the accident happened at 7 p.m. when only two individuals were killed. “At 7 p.m., Train no. 12254 (Anga Express), traveling between Vidyasagar and Kasitar, came to a halt due to chain pulling. Shortly after, at 7:07 p.m., two individuals walking along the tracks were hit by a MEMU train on the up line, approximately two kilometers from where the Anga Express stopped,” stated the Eastern Railway in a press release. A committee comprising three members has been established to investigate the incident.
Chetna Nand Singh, the Divisional Railway Manager of Asansol, clarified that the deceased were not passengers of the Anga Express. “The incident occurred about 1 km away from where the Angan Express was halted due to chain pulling. While the train was stationary, another local train passed in the UP direction, resulting in the collision with the individuals walking on the tracks,” explained the DRM.
Indian President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. “The news of multiple fatalities in a train accident in Jamtara district, Jharkhand, is deeply distressing. My heartfelt condolences go out to the grieving families, and I pray for the swift recovery of the injured,” Ms. Murmu conveyed in a post on X, written in Hindi.
