Russian Air Force Boosts Effectiveness in Ukraine War with Glide Bombs
Western experts have noted a significant increase in the effectiveness of Russia’s air force in the Ukraine conflict due to the heightened use of “glide bombs.” These Soviet-era bombs, upgraded with wings and guidance systems, can carry up to half a ton of explosives and have been instrumental in Russia’s recent battlefield successes.
Deployed alongside drones, missiles, and artillery, glide bombs have provided Moscow with a new level of destructive firepower, as demonstrated by the recent capture of Avdiivka, marking Russia’s first major victory in almost a year. By allowing Russian jets to operate from greater distances, these bombs have countered Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems effectively.
Despite Ukraine’s possession of air defenses and fighter planes, the glide bombs have posed a serious challenge, given their destructive power and long-range capabilities. Ukrainian forces also utilize guided bombs, such as the U.S.-made JDAM system, but in limited quantities compared to their Russian counterparts.
During the battle for Avdiivka, Ukrainian troops experienced the devastating impact of the glide bombs firsthand, with numerous bombs striking their positions daily, causing widespread destruction. The surge in Russian airstrikes, primarily using glide bombs, has intensified since December, with over 100 strikes reported daily across the front lines.
The effectiveness of glide bombs in urban warfare, particularly in targeting specific areas, presents a formidable challenge for Ukrainian defenses. Attempts to counter these munitions have been limited, as they are difficult to intercept due to their heavy iron construction and trajectory.
Despite claims of success in downing Russian aircraft, skepticism remains among analysts, with concerns of over-claiming and evasion tactics by Russian pilots. However, the downing of a prized A-50 aircraft, confirmed by British intelligence, suggests some success for Ukrainian forces.
As Russian forces expand their use of glide bombs, particularly in the Kharkiv region, Ukrainian officials warn of escalating threats. The increasing priority placed on these munitions underscores their strategic importance in the ongoing conflict.
