Shane Gillis Returns to Host ‘SNL’: Acknowledging Past Firing with Humor

Comedian Shane Gillis made a surprising return to host “SNL” on February 24, 2024, after being dismissed from the cast back in 2019 due to controversial remarks he made that were deemed racist, homophobic, and misogynistic.

Addressing his past firing in his opening monologue, Gillis humorously acknowledged the elephant in the room, saying, “I’m here. Most of you probably have no idea who I am. I was actually — I was fired from this show a while ago. But, you know, don’t look that up, please. If you don’t know who I am, please don’t Google that. It’s fine. Don’t even worry about it.”

Gillis’s departure from “SNL” occurred just a week after his hiring was announced, prompting a statement from longtime executive producer Lorne Michaels expressing regret over not being aware of Gillis’s controversial remarks earlier. Michaels emphasized the importance of having diverse voices and points of view on the show but condemned the offensive language used by Gillis.

Gillis himself took to social media to address his firing, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation while also expressing gratitude for the opportunity. He emphasized his commitment to comedy and his understanding of the decision made by “SNL.”

Since his departure from the show in 2019, Gillis has remained active in the comedy scene, co-hosting the popular podcast “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast” and releasing a Netflix comedy special titled “Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs” in 2023.
