Sands of Time: Tyla’s Met Gala Debut Stuns in Balmain as She Talks Album Success and Future Plans

Last summer, Tyla made waves with “Water,” but for her debut appearance at the 2024 Met Gala on Monday evening (May 6), she opted for a different theme inspired by the event’s dress code, “The Garden of Time.”

Embracing the theme, the South African popiano sensation arrived in a stunning Balmain gown that shimmered with grit and glitter, symbolizing the sands of time. Accompanying her ensemble was a unique accessory: an hourglass sand timer.

“I’m essentially wearing sand, embodying the sands of time. We wanted something truly unconventional this year,” she shared with Met Gala red carpet host La La Anthony. “Walking with Balmain, experiencing my first Met Gala—it’s surreal. I can’t wait to see all the photos later. I’m thrilled with how everything came together.”

Despite setbacks, including canceling her Coachella performance and delaying her North American tour due to an injury announced in March, Tyla remains enthusiastic about her upcoming endeavors. “Touring, festivals—I’m gearing up for it all. Plus, I just released my debut album. Stream it, folks! Tyla. There’s so much more in store, and I’m excited to share it.”

Tyla’s eponymous debut studio album, dropped on March 22, 2024, through Fax and Epic Records, made impressive chart appearances, peaking at No. 24 on the Billboard 200 and No. 8 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Notably, it claimed the top spot on World Albums, reigning at No. 1 for the past two weeks.
