Rugby League Honors Late Star Carl Webb: Introducing the Carl Webb Medal

In a poignant tribute to the late rugby league star Carl Webb, the NRL has decided to immortalize him in one of its most anticipated derbies. The standout player in the clash between Queensland rivals, the Brisbane Broncos and the North Queensland Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium, will now be bestowed with the inaugural Carl Webb Medal.

This honor commemorates the memory of Webb, who tragically passed away late last year at the age of 42 after bravely battling motor neurone disease for nearly four years. Webb’s courageous fight against the progressive neurological disorder was highlighted in a special feature on Fox League last year.

Following his passing, the Carl Webb Foundation was established by his close friends and former teammates to raise awareness for motor neurone disease. In October, a charity rugby league match was organized to support this cause.

Before the derby, a solemn minute’s silence was observed in remembrance of the former Queensland and Australia player. Webb’s family and former teammates formed a line of honor as players from both teams took to the field.

Fans attending the game were given the opportunity to contribute to the foundation’s efforts. Special limited edition “We Give a XXXX About MND – Cheers to Charlie” beer, produced by club sponsor XXXX Gold, was auctioned off during the game, with proceeds going to the MND and ME Foundation. Additionally, a minimum of $40,000 was guaranteed to be raised through the 50-50 Charity Raffle held at the game.

In a touching gesture, supporters could also have the letter ‘Q’ shaved into their hair, reminiscent of Webb’s iconic haircut during his Queensland playing days, at the Fan Zone on the plaza next to The Carl Webb Foundation merchandise stand.

Webb’s impact on the game was significant, having played for the Brisbane Broncos from 2000 to 2004 and then for the North Queensland Cowboys from 2005 to 2010. His former teammate, Darren Lockyer, expressed his approval of the introduction of the Carl Webb Medal, describing it as a “wonderful” tribute that enhances Webb’s legacy and would be deeply personal for the recipient.
