Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce after seven years of marriage, according to court records in Palm Beach County, Florida. This unexpected news surfaces just before the PGA Championship.
McIlroy and his wife, Erica Stoll, met in a storybook fashion during the Ryder Cup in 2012. They began dating two years later and tied the knot in 2017. The couple has one daughter, Poppy, who was born in September 2020.
The divorce filing was initially reported by TMZ on Monday. However, there were no documents immediately available regarding the petition for dissolution of marriage.
McIlroy’s attorney in this matter is Thomas Sasser, the same lawyer who represented Tiger Woods during his 2010 divorce.
“Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed,” said his manager, Sean O’Flaherty, in a statement. “They emphasized Rory’s desire for this process to be as respectful and amicable as possible.” O’Flaherty also noted that there would be no further comments on the matter.
McIlroy arrived at Valhalla on Tuesday. He has not won a major championship in 10 years, with his last victory being at Valhalla in the 2014 PGA Championship. His pre-tournament news conference is scheduled for Wednesday.
