Briton Emma Raducanu advances to round three at Indian Wells after her opponent, Dayana Yastremska, retired due to illness during the opening set.
Raducanu, 21, quickly gained a 4-0 lead in just 18 minutes in the first set, with Yastremska retiring from the match after seeking medical assistance while holding her stomach.
In her next match, Raducanu is set to face off against world number two Aryna Sabalenka, 25, who recently defended her Australian Open title.
Reflecting on Yastremska’s illness, Raducanu expressed sympathy, stating, “I had zero idea to be honest… I just feel bad for Dayana because she’s been through a lot… I really empathize with her.”
Raducanu, who received a wildcard entry, broke Yastremska’s serve early on and displayed strong performance throughout the match.
Elsewhere in the tournament, American Coco Gauff, 19, fought hard to secure her spot in round three, overcoming Clara Burel in a tough three-set match. Gauff’s victory marks her 50th WTA 1,000 win, a notable achievement for the young tennis star.
Additionally, Japan’s Naomi Osaka and Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina also progressed to the next round, while several other seeded players faced early exits from the tournament.
