Prince Harry, also known as the Duke of Sussex, has formally announced his status as a resident of the United States, marking a significant step in his increasing detachment from Britain. This acknowledgment follows his and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, stepping back from their royal duties four years ago.
The confirmation of his US residency was made through paperwork filed by a travel company he controls, Travalyst Ltd. The company, founded in 2020 with a focus on promoting sustainable tourism globally, informed British authorities of Harry’s relocation to the United States.
The documentation, received by Companies House, the UK government agency overseeing the incorporation of companies, highlights Harry’s distancing from his role as one of King Charles III’s counsellors of state. Despite remaining formally as a counsellor of state, recent developments suggest that practical considerations limit his involvement in royal duties.
Since moving to a villa in Montecito, Southern California, in 2020, Harry has been vocal in his criticisms of the royal family. His candid revelations, including allegations of unconscious racism, featured in various media platforms, including a Netflix series and his autobiography, “Spare.”
However, Harry’s US residency is not without scrutiny. The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, has raised questions regarding the Department of Homeland Security’s decision to grant him a US visa, considering admissions of drug use disclosed in his autobiography.
The news of Harry’s updated residency coincides with Prince William’s return to public duties following his wife, Kate, the Princess of Wales, undergoing preventive chemotherapy for cancer. During his engagement at a surplus food redistribution charity, William received “get well soon” cards for Kate and King Charles, who is also undergoing treatment.
In a separate development, Harry faced a setback in his attempt to appeal against a high court decision supporting a reduction in his personal security level during visits to the UK. This legal issue adds another layer to Harry’s complex relationship with his homeland and the royal family.
