“Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Address on Commonwealth Day:
Today, on Commonwealth Day, we stand in solidarity with our fellow member nations across the globe to celebrate our shared values and collective endeavors towards a brighter future.
Within the Commonwealth, spanning 56 nations across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia, we collaborate on pressing issues ranging from democracy and peace to climate action, education, and sustainable development. Through our diverse strengths, we endeavor to improve the lives of our citizens, encapsulated by this year’s theme, ‘One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.’
In an era marked by escalating challenges to global peace, economic stability, and humanitarian crises, the relevance of the Commonwealth and its principles has never been more pronounced. Together, we can confront the complexities of the future, ensuring that nations, regardless of size, have an equal voice on the world stage.
Canada’s commitment to the Commonwealth is exemplified through initiatives such as the Commonwealth of Learning, headquartered in British Columbia. Through innovative approaches, this organization extends quality education opportunities worldwide.
As we anticipate the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia, Samoa, this October, presided over by His Majesty King Charles III as Head of the Commonwealth, Canada eagerly anticipates further collaboration and progress.
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I urge Canadians to explore the Commonwealth’s work and our partnerships as we collectively strive to build a more inclusive and prosperous future for all.”
