Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo clarified the reasoning behind awarding the Minister of Defense, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Prabowo Subianto, a special rank within the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). The decision, he stated, was by Law Number 20 of 2009 regarding Titles, Service Certificates, and Honors. Speaking to reporters after the 2024 TNI-Polri Leadership Meeting at TNI Headquarters in Jakarta on February 28, 2024, the President emphasized that the conferment followed a thorough verification process by the Board of Merit and Honor Awards.
President Widodo highlighted that the recognition was due to Prabowo Subianto’s significant contributions to the defense sector, with services dating back two years. He noted that in 2022, Prabowo had already received the Bintang Yudha Dharma Utama award for his exceptional dedication, which greatly propelled the advancement of both the TNI and the nation.
The President further revealed that the proposal for Prabowo’s special rank came from the TNI Commander, aiming to acknowledge his merits starting from the ground up. Acting upon this proposal, President Widodo approved the honorary promotion, elevating Prabowo to the rank of Honorary TNI General.
It’s worth mentioning that Prabowo Subianto joins a select group of individuals who have previously been bestowed with the title of Honorary TNI General, including former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.
