Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the significant strides made during the past five years, labeling them as a period of ‘reform, perform, and transform’. Expressing gratitude, particularly towards Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, during the final session of the 17th Lok Sabha, PM Modi noted the challenges, notably the COVID-19 pandemic, that the parliamentary term faced. He commended the MPs for their willingness to reduce their salaries by 30% and cease the subsidy on canteen food, preventing public criticism.
Reflecting on the relocation to the new Parliament building, PM Modi recalled the establishment of the Sengol in the new edifice. He underscored the historic decisions taken during the term, such as the abrogation of Article 370. He said “I feel that those who drafted the Constitution would bless us for this,” adding that decisions for which many generations waited for long were taken by the 17th Lok Sabha.
Advocating for ‘minimum government, maximum governance’, PM Modi stressed the importance of the government maintaining a respectful distance from citizens’ lives and placing trust in them.
PM Modi highlighted key legislative accomplishments, including the annulment of Article 370 and the passage of the triple talaq bill. He also noted that the new Parliament building’s inception coincided with the women’s reservation bill, signaling a commitment to gender equality.
Looking ahead, PM Modi projected a ‘Vikshit Bharat’ (developed India) in the next 25 years, acknowledging the forthcoming challenges and aspirations. Despite acknowledging the forthcoming elections and potential apprehensions, PM Modi reaffirmed their significance as a cornerstone of democracy.
