PM Modi Engages in Talks with Putin, Emphasizes Diplomacy for Russia-Ukraine Conflict Resolution

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently engaged in a telephone conversation with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, where he reiterated India’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy as the key to resolving the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Modi also extended congratulations to Putin on his re-election, expressing wishes for the peace and prosperity of the Russian people.

Putin secured his fifth presidential term in Moscow, underscoring his continued leadership in Russia. During the discussion, Modi and Putin affirmed their dedication to strengthening the Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership between their nations in the future.

The leaders conducted a comprehensive review of bilateral cooperation progress and exchanged perspectives on regional and global issues of mutual concern. They affirmed their intention to maintain regular communication to foster closer ties.

PM Modi took to a microblogging platform to share his sentiments, stating, “Spoke with President Putin and congratulated him on his re-election as the President of the Russian Federation. We agreed to work together to further deepen and expand the India-Russia Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership in the years ahead.”

In a separate development, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba is scheduled to visit India the following week to garner support for Ukraine’s peace initiatives. This marks the first visit by a senior Ukrainian official since Russia’s invasion two years ago, following an invitation extended by Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar after discussions between Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy earlier this year.

Despite India’s longstanding economic and defense ties with Russia, New Delhi has refrained from openly criticizing Russia’s actions in Ukraine, instead focusing on increased oil purchases from Russia. PM Modi has maintained communication with leaders from both Ukraine and Russia, having met President Zelenskyy during a G7 summit in Japan last May.
