News outlets retract photo of Princess Kate after failing editorial standards

Following a post-release evaluation, several news organizations have pulled a photograph released by Kensington Palace featuring Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales. Reuters reported that the image “failed to meet their editorial criteria.”

The picture, distributed on Sunday to commemorate Mother’s Day in Britain, depicts the Princess of Wales seated with her three children: 10-year-old Prince George, 8-year-old Princess Charlotte, and 5-year-old Prince Louis. Kate, dressed in jeans, a sweater, and a dark jacket, expressed gratitude for the good wishes received during her recovery from abdominal surgery in January.

The accompanying message, signed “C” for Catherine, thanked supporters and wished everyone a Happy Mother’s Day. Kensington Palace stated that the photo was taken by Kate’s husband, Prince William, in Windsor earlier in the week.

However, concerns over potential manipulation prompted several news agencies to retract the image.

Since her discharge from the hospital on January 29, the 42-year-old princess, wife of Prince William, has been recuperating at their Windsor residence. Kate’s absence from public engagements since Christmas Day fueled speculation about her health on social media.

Kate underwent undisclosed surgery on January 16, with details kept private. Kensington Palace clarified that the procedure was not related to cancer. Her recovery was expected to extend past Easter, with official updates provided as necessary.

Kate’s hospitalization coincided with news of King Charles, William’s father, undergoing surgery for a benign prostate condition and subsequent cancer diagnosis.
