Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has exchanged vows with her longtime partner Sophie Allouache in a heartwarming ceremony in Adelaide.
In a brief statement shared on Facebook, Senator Wong expressed their joy at having their cherished family and friends join them on this momentous occasion.
The wedding reportedly took place at the picturesque Bird in Hand winery in Woodside, nestled in the Adelaide Hills, on Saturday. Among the esteemed guests were Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his fiancee Jodie Haydon, along with several Labor colleagues.
Adding to the enchantment of the event, the couple’s daughters, 12-year-old Alexandra, and eight-year-old Hannah, adorned the role of flower girls.
Senator Wong’s online announcement garnered thousands of congratulatory messages, including well-wishes from Australian Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil and Skills and Training Minister Brendan O’Connor.
Having met Ms. Allouache in 2007, Senator Wong chose not to publicly disclose their engagement, preferring to cherish the moment privately.
While South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas couldn’t attend the ceremony, he extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newlyweds, wishing them a lifetime of happiness.
Opposition Senate leader Simon Birmingham also shared his blessings on Senator Wong’s Facebook post, hoping that their bond would endure through life’s joys and challenges alike.
Senator Wong, a trailblazer as the first openly LGBTIQ woman in the Senate and later in the cabinet as Minister for Climate Change, has been a prominent advocate for equality. Her emotional reaction to Australia’s landmark vote in support of same-sex marriage in 2017 resonated globally, symbolizing a significant step towards inclusivity and acceptance.
