Patrick Mahomes Sr. Faces Third DWI Charge: Super Bowl Champion’s Father Arrested Again

Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes, was arrested in February for his third alleged drunk driving incident. The retired Major League relief pitcher has been formally indicted on a felony drunk driving charge in Smith County, Texas.

This marks at least the third DWI charge for Mahomes Sr., who played for several Major League Baseball teams from 1992 to 2003, including the New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Texas Rangers. Reports suggest that he could face a 10-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine.

Mahomes Sr. previously served a 40-day sentence for his second DWI charge in 2018 and has a history of DUI incidents dating back to 1994. In 2016, he was arrested for public intoxication during a match between Texas Christian University and his son’s alma mater, Texas Tech University.

Despite intending to attend his son’s Super Bowl LVIII game against the San Francisco 49ers on February 11, Mahomes Sr.’s arrest occurred just days before the championship game. Patrick Mahomes Jr. addressed his father’s situation during a press conference, stating, “He’s doing good. I don’t really want to get into it too much…”

While the Smith County District Attorney’s office has not commented on the pending case, police reported finding an open beer can in Mahomes Sr.’s car and noted several failed sobriety tests. Additionally, his vehicle’s registration had reportedly expired, and it was moving slower than other cars at the time of his arrest.
