Lily Gladstone, an Oscar nominee this year for “Killers of the Flower Moon” and a graduate of Mountlake Terrace High School, takes the lead in the new Hulu limited series “Under the Bridge,” which began streaming on April 17. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 true-crime book, the show delves into the tragic 1997 death of Reena Virk, a Vancouver Island teenager who disappeared after attending a party. The series follows the investigation led by police officer Cam Bentland, portrayed by Gladstone, who rekindles a connection with writer Rebecca Godfrey, played by Riley Keough.
While the character of Cam Bentland is fictional, the story intertwines with Godfrey’s real-life experiences. Godfrey, who passed away in 2022, collaborated with writer/director Quinn Shephard to adapt her book for television.
In an interview with Deadline, Gladstone emphasized the importance of portraying the human side of the tragedy and not sensationalizing the crime. She highlighted the need to honor the experiences of the victims’ families, rather than reducing their pain to mere media fodder.
Later this year, Gladstone will also appear in the independent film “Fancy Dance,” hitting theaters on June 21 and streaming on Apple TV+ from June 28. Additionally, she serves as the narrator and executive producer of the documentary “Bring Them Home,” which follows Blackfeet tribal members’ efforts to reintroduce a wild buffalo herd to their ancestral lands. The film will premiere at SIFF on May 16 and May 18 at SIFF Cinema Uptown. For more information, visit siff.net.
