Monk’s Kettle: Bid Farewell to 16th Street, Welcome to Rockridge

The iconic spot known for its laid-back ambiance and quality beer and burgers in the Mission District, The Monk’s Kettle, is bidding farewell to its original location at 3141 16th Street. However, it’s not a goodbye forever, as it’s relocating to the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland. The move comes as the lease for the 16th Street location expires, presenting an opportunity for the Monk’s Kettle team to transition to a larger space with better terms. The closure is scheduled for June, with plans for a grand opening in Oakland slated for early fall. The San Rafael outpost will remain unaffected.

In a heartfelt letter titled “Reflections on a 16 Year Run on 16th Street,” co-owner Christian Albertson reflects on the changing landscape of San Francisco since The Monk’s Kettle’s inception in 2007. He laments the shift towards app-based delivery services, which has impacted the traditional dining experience and camaraderie that the establishment once thrived on. Additionally, Albertson highlights the transient nature of the city, with an influx of short-term tech workers who are less inclined to invest in local establishments.

The new Oakland location, occupying the former Citron space at 5484 College Avenue, promises exciting changes. An open floor plan, a spacious bar area (complete with the signature lion head back bar), and a dining room featuring a large back deck surrounded by greenery offer a fresh setting for patrons. Street-side parklets will also be utilized to expand seating capacity.

Closing events and special sales, including offerings from the cellar and revisiting vintage menus, will be held in the coming months, with updates shared on The Monk’s Kettle’s social media platforms. Albertson expresses gratitude to the loyal patrons and looks forward to welcoming them to the new neighborhood tavern in Rockridge. Operating hours at the current location will remain from noon to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from noon to midnight on Friday and Saturday until the closure in June.
