Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and Messenger, platforms managed by Meta, experienced a widespread global outage, according to outage tracking websites like Downdetector. Users faced difficulties loading apps, sending messages, and refreshing their feeds on both Facebook and Instagram. The outage led to over 300,000 reports of issues on Facebook and more than 20,000 on Instagram. Many users found themselves logged out of their Facebook accounts and were unable to log back in due to the outage.
Downdetector monitors outages by aggregating status reports from various sources, including user-submitted errors. The extent of the outage may have affected a larger number of users. Meta has not yet responded to the global outage, and it remains uncertain how long it will take for the servers to resume normal functions.
WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, has not reported any outages at this time. However, the newly launched Threads, a rival platform, is also experiencing downtime. In response to the outage, users quickly migrated to alternative platforms like X, owned by Elon Musk. #Instagramdown, Facebook, and Mark Zuckerberg are currently trending on social media platforms, with users sharing memes and reactions to the global server issue.
Last year, a major outage occurred in July across Meta platforms, including WhatsApp, which were restored later in the day. This outage followed a similar issue reported in June, indicating a recurring challenge for the company in maintaining stable service.
