“Kristen Stewart’s Directorial Dream Delayed? Inside the Drama & Romance of Her Latest Film, ‘Love Lies Bleeding’

Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, “The Chronology of Water,” has encountered significant challenges in getting off the ground, facing hurdles in securing financing. Stewart has taken a firm stance, declaring to Variety in January that she wouldn’t embark on another project until her directorial venture materialized.

Despite the setbacks with her directorial aspirations, audiences can anticipate Stewart’s forthcoming performances in two diverse films: “Love Me” and “Love Lies Bleeding.” These films delve into narratives where Stewart’s characters navigate passionate romances while grappling with questionable decisions to sustain their relationships.

In “Love Lies Bleeding,” slated for release in US theaters this month, Stewart portrays Lou, a gym manager captivated by aspiring bodybuilder Jackie, portrayed by Katy M. O’Brian. The film, written and directed by Brit Rose Glass, unfolds against the backdrop of 1980s New Mexico, where Lou and Jackie’s romance intertwines with the complexities of Lou’s involvement in her crime-ridden family, overseen by the grizzled Ed Harris.

Described as a blend of “Bonnie and Clyde” and the Coen Brothers’ style, “Love Lies Bleeding” offers a blend of nostalgic Americana and contemporary filmmaking. Stewart, reflecting on her experience working with Glass, acknowledges the director’s unique vision and leadership, underscoring the importance of trusting the director’s creative instincts.

Stewart’s collaboration with Glass is a testament to her evolution as an actor and her willingness to explore diverse projects beyond mainstream cinema. Having worked with renowned filmmakers like David Cronenberg, Pablo Larraín, and Olivier Assayas, Stewart brings a wealth of experience and insights to her craft.

For Glass, Stewart was the ideal choice for the role of Lou, showcasing her versatility as an actor and her commitment to the project. Stewart’s endorsement of Glass’s directorial prowess highlights their collaborative synergy and mutual respect on set.

Looking ahead, Stewart aspires to emulate the collaborative dynamic she shares with Glass in her own directorial endeavors. She emphasizes the importance of fostering relationships with collaborators who share a genuine affinity and commitment to the creative process.

Beyond her acting career, Stewart’s directorial ambitions underscore her multifaceted talents and her determination to carve out a distinct niche in the film industry. As she navigates the challenges of filmmaking, Stewart’s dedication and passion serve as a testament to her enduring influence in the realm of cinema.

“Love Lies Bleeding” is set to premiere in select US cinemas on March 8, with a wider release scheduled for March 15. The film will subsequently debut in the UK on May 3, offering audiences a captivating blend of romance, suspense, and cinematic artistry.
