Lucknow Super Giants’ skipper KL Rahul was notably absent during the toss for their second IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings on Saturday. In a surprising turn of events, Nicholas Pooran took charge as the captain for LSG. Initially, concerns arose regarding Rahul’s absence, sparking speculations of another injury setback. However, Pooran’s decision to bat after winning the toss allayed those fears, as he confirmed Rahul’s participation in the match – albeit in the role of an Impact Player.
Rahul had recently returned to action after a nearly two-month hiatus in the season opener against Rajasthan Royals. Despite his return, concerns about his fitness lingered, prompting the decision to designate him as an Impact Player for the match.
Speaking at the toss, Pooran stated, “KL is returning from injury, and we aim to manage his workload in this lengthy tournament. However, he will contribute as an impact player today.”
Rahul had suffered a quadriceps injury following the first Test against England earlier in the year, sidelining him for the remainder of the series. After undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, he was deemed fit for the IPL season.
In his comeback match against the Royals, the LSG captain played a pivotal innings, scoring 58 runs off 44 deliveries. Despite his efforts, lack of support from the top order led to a defeat for the Super Giants.
Both teams sought to gain momentum in Saturday’s match. While LSG aimed for their first win of the season, Punjab Kings aimed to bounce back from their recent loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Led by Shikhar Dhawan, Punjab Kings had a successful start in the league with a victory against Delhi Capitals in their home match in Mullanpur.
