In a significant departure from tradition, King Charles announced the opening of Balmoral Castle to the public, marking the first time in its history since the castle’s completion in 1855. The royal residence, situated in Scotland, has long been a private sanctuary for the Royal Family, but this unprecedented move reflects a shift towards greater accessibility and engagement with the public.
Previously, visitors were permitted to explore only the palace grounds and gardens, with access to the interior limited to the ballroom. However, the new initiative aims to provide visitors with a comprehensive experience of Balmoral’s rich heritage and significance.
Described as a “much loved and celebrated Highland home of the Royal Family” on the Palace’s website, Balmoral Castle holds a special place in royal history. Now, visitors will have the opportunity to embark on a Castle Internal Guided Tour, offering an intimate exploration of several of the castle’s exquisite rooms. Experienced guides will lead guests on a historical journey, delving into the origins of the castle and its enduring legacy across generations of the Royal Family.
Particularly poignant is the inclusion of rooms where the late Queen Elizabeth spent her final days, adding a personal and emotive dimension to the tour. From the purchase of Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to its present-day use by Their Majesties The King and Queen, visitors will traverse through time, gaining insight into the castle’s evolution and significance.
Commencing on July 1st and running through August 4th, the private tours will accommodate groups of 10 individuals per session. Pricing details for the guided excursions are available on the website, with options for a standard tour or an enhanced experience including an afternoon tea break.
It is worth noting that these tours are exclusively tailored for adults, ensuring a refined and immersive experience for visitors. With this historic decision, King Charles aims to foster greater appreciation and understanding of Balmoral Castle’s cultural and historical importance, inviting the public to share in its storied legacy.
