Indigenous AFL Legend Eddie Betts Exposes Racial Abuse Against His Children, Sparks Outcry and Investigation

Victoria police are launching an investigation following an incident where Indigenous AFL legend Eddie Betts shared footage of his children being subjected to racial abuse in their own yard, expressing concerns about their safety.

Betts took to social media to share security camera footage showing a white car driving down their street, slowing down in front of their home, and an individual yelling racial slurs. The footage depicted Betts’ children playing basketball in their fenced yard as the car passed by.

Expressing his dismay, Betts stated, “Aboriginal kids deserve to be able to play safely, free from racism and abuse over the fence. We are not even safe in our own homes.” He urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the impact of such behavior on their children.

Acknowledging the support received, Betts later posted a photo of his children back on the basketball court, stating, “Thanks everyone for your support … it’s not going to stop the kids from playing ball.”

Victoria police confirmed receiving a report regarding verbal racial abuse toward children outside a property in Glen Iris, condemning crimes motivated by prejudice and urging witnesses to report such incidents.

A spokesperson for Betts’ foundation highlighted the distress caused by the overt and aggressive racism directed at his young children, emphasizing the importance of addressing racism in all its forms.

Various officials and organizations, including Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan, AFL CEO Andrew Dillon, and the AFL Players’ Association, condemned the incident and offered support to Betts and his family.

Betts, who retired from the AFL in 2021, has been vocal about the racist abuse he has faced throughout his career, emphasizing the need to address racism in Australia. He has been committed to using his platform to raise awareness and combat racial discrimination.
