India Objects to German Foreign Office’s Remarks on Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest; AAP Alleges Political Motivation

India expressed its objection to the comments made by the spokesperson of the German Foreign Office regarding the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Ministry of External Affairs stated on Saturday that “The German Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi was summoned today and conveyed India’s strong protest on their Foreign Office Spokesperson’s comments on our internal affairs.”

The ministry emphasized that such remarks are viewed as interference in India’s judicial process and as undermining the independence of the judiciary. India, it stated, is a vibrant democracy with a strong rule of law.

Furthermore, the statement highlighted that the legal process will unfold independently in this case, as is customary in all legal matters within the country and in other democratic nations. It asserted that biased assumptions regarding this matter are entirely unwarranted.

The statement made by the German spokesperson

The ministry’s response followed the circulation of a video showcasing the German Foreign Ministry’s reaction to Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest.

In the video, a spokesperson was questioned about the timing of Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest just prior to the Lok Sabha Elections, with the Opposition alleging political motivations behind it.

In reply, the spokesperson stated, “We have taken note of the case. India being a democratic country, we expect that principles concerning the independence of the judiciary and fundamental democratic values will be upheld in this matter.”

“Like any individual facing allegations, Mr. Kejriwal is entitled to a fair and unbiased trial. This encompasses his right to utilize all legal avenues available to him without hindrance. Presumption of innocence is a cornerstone of the rule of law and should be afforded to him,” added the German spokesperson.

Arvind Kejriwal Arrested in Money Laundering Case Linked to Excise Policy

Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday in connection with a money laundering case related to the excise policy. He was placed in the custody of the ED until March 28. The central probe agencies have accused Kejriwal of being the “key conspirator” in this case.

AAP leaders have accused the Delhi Police, under the control of the central government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), of attempting to stifle the party’s election campaign.
