The world is disturbed by the passing of the esteemed American actor, director, and former American football linebacker, Carl Weathers, at the age of 76. The beloved star, well-known for his iconic performances in films such as Rocky and Predator, peacefully departed in his sleep, as confirmed by a statement from his family. Weathers, who recently gained acclaim for his portrayal of Greef Karga in the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, earning him an Emmy nomination, leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by fans. The entertainment industry mourns the loss of this exceptionally talented actor.
In a statement to Deadline, his family expressed profound sorrow, saying, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carl Weathers.” They went on to describe him as an extraordinary individual who led an exceptional life. Recognized globally and across generations for his contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports, Carl left an unforgettable mark. The statement highlighted his roles as a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend, underscoring the impact he had on those close to him.
Carl Weathers was born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana. During his early years, he secured an athletic scholarship to St. Augustine High School. Initially eyeing a career in professional football as a defensive end in college, Weathers transitioned to the linebacker position in 1970 upon signing with the Oakland Raiders as a free agent. His football journey continued with the Canadian Football League’s BC Lions, but in 1974, he chose to exit the sports arena and embark on a career in Hollywood, focusing on action movies.
In the initial stages of his career, Carl Weathers played noteworthy roles in two blaxploitation films under the direction of his longtime friend Arthur Marks. His profile received a significant boost with an appearance in an early 1975 episode of the sitcom Good Times titled “The Nude.” Weathers’ path to portraying Apollo Creed in Rocky took an interesting turn when he provided constructive criticism of Sylvester Stallone’s acting during the audition. This critique ultimately earned him the role, and he continued to portray Apollo Creed in the subsequent three Rocky films: Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), and Rocky IV (1985). Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Weathers solidified his presence in the action film genre, starring in productions such as Force 10 from Navarone (1978), Predator, and more.
