Hunter Biden’s recent conviction on three felony charges marks a historic first: the child of a sitting president being found guilty of felonies. Despite the gravity of this moment, its impact on the presidential race appears limited. Both Republican and Democratic strategists believe the conviction is unlikely to significantly influence voter preferences, given the entrenched positions of the electorate regarding President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
Republican pollster Robert Blizzard noted that the conviction might not affect the race much, citing the minimal impact of Trump’s recent felony conviction. “Considering how little the Trump verdict seemed to move the needle, I’m not sure Hunter’s will do anything either,” he said. Hunter Biden was convicted on charges related to purchasing a firearm while allegedly addicted to crack cocaine, a point that has been a focal issue for Republicans who have long targeted him, accusing him of involving his father in questionable business dealings—claims the White House denies.
The Biden administration has framed these Republican allegations as conspiracy theories, emphasizing the president’s support for his son and his recovery journey. As the campaign rhetoric continues, both sides are expected to maintain their messaging strategies. Republican strategist Rob Stutzman commented, “I don’t think the verdict will materially impact the race. It does mute GOP claims that the Biden DOJ is weaponized against Trump and MAGA, but the election isn’t turning on that question.”
Nonetheless, some Republicans are leveraging the verdict to critique President Biden. Dave Carney, a seasoned GOP strategist leading a new pro-Trump super PAC, suggested the ruling could slightly impact the race and weaken Biden’s attacks on Trump’s convictions. “It takes the ‘convicted felon’ issue off the table for Biden. Their toolbox is looking bleaker,” he remarked. Others pointed to Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop, introduced as evidence, which had been a contentious point for Republicans and dismissed by Democrats as a conspiracy theory. GOP strategist Scott Jennings argued this might undermine Biden’s credibility with voters, saying, “Do they believe it when he says things to them about himself or about Donald Trump? And now, one of the problems is they know full well he lied right to their face about this laptop.”
Democratic strategists dismissed concerns that the conviction would harm President Biden’s standing. They believe undecided voters are more focused on other issues, including Trump’s legal challenges. Peter Giangreco, a Democratic strategist, noted, “I don’t think Hunter Biden matters to folks much at all except for extreme Trumpers who will say ‘see!’ But their candidate got convicted, not one of his kids. That’s a voting issue.”
Jesse Ferguson, another Democratic strategist, emphasized the distinction between Biden and Trump, stating, “Voters know that there’s only one candidate for president who thinks he’s above the law and is convicted of 34 felonies for fraud.” Democrats also suggest that Hunter Biden’s struggles resonate with many American families dealing with addiction. Karen Finney, a veteran of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, pointed out that the situation might make President Biden more relatable, saying, “Millions of American families deal with addiction, the impact of addiction and the journey of recovery.”
Biden fundraiser John Morgan echoed this sentiment, noting, “Only a person with no heart would not be sympathetic” to Hunter Biden’s story. He added that Biden’s acceptance of the judicial process contrasts with Trump’s rhetoric, potentially boosting the president.
President Joe Biden has largely refrained from politicizing the verdict, issuing a personal statement from the White House. “As I said last week, I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today. So many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the feeling of pride seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery. As I also said last week, I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal,” the president stated.
