In a remarkable display of collective passion for cinema, a group of prominent Hollywood directors, including JJ Abrams, Guillermo del Toro, and Gina Prince-Bythewood, gathered outside the iconic Village Theater in Westwood, Los Angeles. Their mission? To announce their joint stewardship of this historic movie venue, a beloved cornerstone of film culture since its opening in 1931.
This endeavor marks a significant milestone in the theater’s history, which was previously operated by Regency Theaters. Now, under the guidance of acclaimed director Jason Reitman, known for his work on “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Up in the Air,” more than 30 directors, including luminaries such as Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan, have stepped forward to ensure the preservation of this cultural landmark.
In a collective statement, the group expressed their commitment to maintaining the Village Theater as a vibrant hub for cinephiles, where cherished movie memorabilia and personal collections of props and costumes will be proudly showcased. Spielberg articulated his vision to restore the theater to its former glory, emphasizing its role as a revered institution for film enthusiasts.
Chris Columbus, director of beloved classics like “Home Alone” and “Harry Potter,” pledged to contribute part of his collection of 16mm film prints, underscoring the theater’s significance as a sanctuary for cinematic treasures. Nolan, renowned for his visionary filmmaking, expressed his excitement about collaborating on a project that redefines the future of film exhibition.
While the specifics of the theater’s acquisition remain undisclosed, the directors’ dedication to preserving its legacy as a cultural monument is unwavering. Reitman, reflecting on his personal connection to the theater, recounted childhood memories of attending screenings with his father, director Ivan Reitman. His initiative to rally fellow directors stemmed from a shared vision to safeguard a space that celebrates the magic of cinema.
With an emphasis on inclusivity and diverse programming, the directors aim to curate an eclectic lineup of screenings that cater to audiences of all ages and tastes. From blockbuster premieres to indie gems and international fare, the Village Theater will offer a dynamic blend of cinematic experiences, curated by some of the industry’s most esteemed filmmakers.
Among the illustrious roster of new owners are luminaries like Judd Apatow, Damien Chazelle, and Alfonso Cuarón, each bringing their unique perspectives and passion for storytelling to this collaborative venture. Together, they envision the Village Theater as not only a premier destination for film lovers but also a vibrant community hub that celebrates the transformative power of cinema.
