Today, Google revealed its decision to rebrand its AI chatbot Bard as Gemini, aligning it with the underlying large language model. Concurrently, the company introduced an advanced tier named Ultra. The revamped Bard will be known as Gemini Advanced in the future. Additionally, Google is set to debut a new Gemini app accessible on Android and the Google app on iOS, offering users direct access to Gemini Advanced.

In a blog post shared by a spokesperson, Google articulated, “Gemini is transforming to encompass more than just the models. It now embraces an entire ecosystem — from the everyday products used by billions of individuals to the APIs and platforms fostering innovation for developers and businesses.” Given that the Bard chatbot has emerged as the primary avenue for interacting with the AI models, it will henceforth be recognized as Gemini.

In December, Google introduced earlier versions of Gemini, namely Pro and Nano. Among these, the most robust and capable model was named Gemini Ultra. This AI model was slated to fuel the updated chatbot, which was to be known as Bard Advanced.

Google has emphasized that the Ultra 1.0 model, upon which Gemini Advanced is built, represents their most significant and potent state-of-the-art AI model, equipped for handling complex tasks with exceptional proficiency. Google asserts that users can now engage in lengthier, more detailed conversations, as Gemini Advanced possesses enhanced contextual understanding. Additionally, it excels in advanced coding and other tasks.

Users can initiate their utilization of Gemini Advanced by enrolling in the new Google One AI Premium Plan, priced at $19.99 per month, which commences with a complimentary two-month trial. Subscribers will gain access to supplementary multimodal features, enhanced interactive coding capabilities, deeper analysis tools, and additional functionalities.

Gemini Advanced is currently accessible in over 150 countries and territories in English, with plans for future expansion to include other languages.

Furthermore, Google intends to incorporate Gemini models into various products such as Workspace and Google Cloud. Subscribers of the AI Premium service will soon have the capability to utilize Gemini across platforms like Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and additional applications.

Android users have the option to download the Gemini app or opt-in via Google Assistant. The Gemini app will offer numerous Google Assistant voice features such as setting timers, making calls, and controlling smart home devices, with additional functionalities planned for the future.

Gemini’s rollout begins today on Android and iOS phones in the U.S. in English, with full availability expected in the upcoming weeks. Starting next week, users in more locations will be able to access Gemini in English, as well as in Japanese and Korean.
