Google is reportedly exploring the introduction of premium features for its AI-driven search engine, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by the Financial Times. The tech giant is considering various options, including integrating AI-driven search functionalities into its existing premium subscription services, such as the Gemini AI assistant available in Gmail and Docs.
Alphabet’s shares experienced a slight decline of approximately 1% during extended trading hours following the news.
If implemented, this initiative would represent Google’s first venture into offering paid access to its core products, as it aims to solidify its position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The traditional search engine would remain accessible free of charge, with advertisements continuing to accompany search results even for subscribers.
In response to inquiries, Google stated to Reuters via email that they are not currently developing or contemplating an ad-free search experience. However, the company affirmed its commitment to continually enhancing its subscription offerings across various Google platforms with new premium capabilities and services.
Google, renowned as a pioneer in the foundational technology underlying today’s AI advancements, finds itself engaged in competition with notable industry players, including OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, and its supporter Microsoft (MSFT.O).
