The 4th-seeded Gonzaga women’s basketball team fought valiantly against the top-seeded Texas Longhorns but fell short in the NCAA Tournament’s round of 16, succumbing to a 69-47 defeat.
It marked Gonzaga’s first appearance in the round of 16 since 2015, raising hopes of an upset over the formidable Longhorns. However, they struggled to contain Texas’ offense and failed to capitalize on their own scoring opportunities.
The game began with a swift layup from Texas’ Madison Booker, met by a spirited three-pointer from Gonzaga’s Brynna Maxwell. Despite Gonzaga’s efforts, Texas surged ahead, leading by nine points at halftime. Gonzaga’s offense faltered, managing only three field goals and committing eight turnovers in the first 15 minutes.
The Longhorns maintained their dominance in the second half, with Shay Holle’s three-pointer capping off a strong finish to the first half. Gonzaga attempted a comeback in the third quarter, but Texas matched them basket for basket, preventing any significant lead reduction.
Although Gonzaga’s Yvonne Ejim reached double-digit points, primarily from free throws, Texas’ balanced scoring led by Shaylee Gonzales, Aaliyah Moore, and Shay Holle secured the victory.
Gonzaga’s shooting woes persisted, with a field goal percentage of just 26.5% and a 4-of-22 performance from beyond the arc. Despite the loss, the team reflected on their achievements throughout the historic 2023-24 season, which saw them post a 32-4 record and set numerous program records.
As the season concludes, Gonzaga faces the task of rebuilding under the leadership of head coach Lisa Fortier, with only Yvonne Ejim returning as a starter for the 2024-25 campaign.
