Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist, the beloved couple from the inaugural season of “The Golden Bachelor,” have decided to part ways. Their decision to divorce was shared exclusively on “Good Morning America” last Friday.
In an interview with Juju Chang, Turner expressed, “Theresa and I have had several heartfelt discussions, evaluating our circumstances, and mutually concluded that it’s time to dissolve our marriage.”
Confirming this decision, Nist added, “We’ve received immense love and support from fans of ‘The Golden Bachelor,’ and we hope that spirit of hope remains unaffected.”
Their journey began with Turner proposing to Nist on the season finale aired on Nov. 30. Despite their commitment to each other, they acknowledged that their dedication to their families led them to this conclusion.
Turner reflected, “In our conversations, we’ve recognized our mutual dedication to our families. It’s in the best interest of our individual happiness to part ways.”
Nist explained, “Our intention was to make it work. We explored various living arrangements but never reached a definitive decision.”
The couple’s televised wedding aired on Jan. 4, with their loved ones in attendance. Holding hands during the interview, they emphasized that their love for each other remains unchanged.
“We still love each other deeply,” Turner affirmed, with Nist echoing the sentiment.
Both widowed after over four decades of marriage, they offered hope to many seeking love later in life. Despite the challenges of being in the public eye, they asserted that external factors did not influence their decision.
Regarding the return of their wedding rings, Nist joked, “I suppose that’s the protocol. But memories are ours to keep.”
They highlighted the importance of having a prenuptial agreement and advised authenticity to the next Golden Bachelorette.
Though their announcement may come as a surprise, they emphasized transparency. Both expressed their intentions to continue their quest for love independently.
