Dasha took her viral sensation “Austin” to the stage of the 2024 CMT Music Awards on Sunday night (April 7), marking her first visit to the city that inspired the song.
Sporting double denim attire including a zip-up jean vest and daisy dukes adorned with a bedazzled belt featuring a rhinestone D buckle, the singer/songwriter delivered the song’s live television debut at Austin’s Moody Center. Accompanied by dancers clad in white shirts paired with camo or denim pants, Dasha and her troupe seamlessly transitioned into a line dance midway through the performance, paying homage to the track’s irresistible line-dancing rhythm which has contributed to its meteoric rise.
Expressing gratitude to the CMTs for their support, Dasha concluded the performance with a heartfelt acknowledgment, revealing, “It’s my first time in Austin!”
This revelation may come as a surprise to fans, given the significant role that the Texas city plays in the song’s narrative. With lyrics like “In 40 years, you’ll still be here, drunk, washed up in Austin,” the song paints a vivid picture of the titular locale. However, speaking on the red carpet prior to the show, Dasha disclosed to Billboard News host Tetris Kelly, “Actually, this is my first time in Austin,” emphasizing the significance of debuting “Austin” on stage at the CMTs.
The success of “Austin” has propelled Dasha to new heights, marking her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 53 and reaching its peak on the Hot Country Songs chart at No. 11 this week. Furthermore, the track has secured her debut on Country Airplay, entering at No. 54. In a recent development, Billboard announced that the previously independent artist has inked a label deal with Warner Records.
