Former Cyclist Rohan Dennis Appears in Court for Wife’s Death Case, Prosecutors Seek Extension for Crash Reconstruction

Rohan Dennis, former professional cyclist, made his first court appearance since being charged in connection to the death of his wife, Olympian Melissa Hoskins. Prosecutors sought a seven-month extension to complete a significant crash reconstruction, with Magistrate Simon Smart questioning the necessity of such a lengthy timeframe. Police prosecutor Caroline Batten explained the need for six months for the reconstruction and four weeks to submit the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions, with the request backdated to the time of the incident.

Defense lawyer Jess Kurtzer, representing Mr. Dennis, requested a bail variation to remove reporting obligations, a request that was unopposed by the prosecutor and granted by the court. Mr. Dennis remained silent throughout the proceedings and did not address the media upon leaving the court.

The tragic incident occurred on December 30 outside the couple’s Medindie home in Adelaide, resulting in Ms. Hoskins’ death. She was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment but succumbed to her injuries overnight. A public memorial service was held for Ms. Hoskins last month on what would have been her 33rd birthday, attended by her family and teammates.

Following an investigation, Mr. Dennis was arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, a major indictable offense, as well as driving without due care. Court documents allege that Mr. Dennis drove recklessly or at a dangerous speed, leading to the death of Melissa Marie Dennis. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 6.
