Terry Hill, a prominent figure in Australian rugby league, has tragically passed away at the age of 52. The former player, known for his stints with Manly, Wests Tigers, Wests, Souths, and Eastern Suburbs, reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack in the Philippines.
His death was confirmed by the Manly Sea Eagles club to ABC Sport via email. Hill enjoyed a distinguished career in the 1990s and early 2000s, amassing 246 first-grade appearances in Australia, representing New South Wales in State of Origin on 14 occasions, and earning nine caps for the Australian national team.
Making his debut for Souths in 1990, Hill found his stride primarily with Manly, where he was part of the premiership-winning side in 1996. He became a key figure for the New South Wales Blues during the latter half of the 1990s, culminating in a memorable confrontation with Queensland Maroons rival Gorden Tallis during the 1999 series.
Manly Sea Eagles CEO Tony Mestrov and Hill’s premiership captain Geoff Toovey both paid heartfelt tributes, emphasizing his impact not only on the field but also as a beloved teammate and friend.
Beyond rugby league, Hill was known for his advocacy for greyhound racing, using his platform to promote the sport during his playing career. Rob Macaulay, the chief executive of Greyhound Racing NSW, expressed deep sorrow at Hill’s passing, highlighting his enduring support and passion for the sport.
Terry Hill leaves behind a legacy as both a sporting icon and a cherished member of the rugby league and greyhound racing communities.
