First Look: Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan in ‘A Complete Unknown’ Biopic

Production is currently underway for “A Complete Unknown,” the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic directed by James Mangold and featuring Timothée Chalamet in the lead role. Set photos from the New York City shoot have surfaced online, offering a glimpse of the 28-year-old actor dressed in period costume.

The film will chronicle Dylan’s arrival onto the New York folk music scene during the 1960s, following his move from Minnesota to the bustling city.

In the released images, Chalamet is seen clad in vintage attire, sporting a weathered scarf, layered with gloves and a thick jacket, suggesting a wintry setting for the scenes. Naturally, he’s seen carrying a guitar, embodying the essence of a young Bob Dylan navigating through the streets of New York.

Joining Chalamet, the ensemble cast for “A Complete Unknown” reportedly includes Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Nick Offerman as Alan Lomax, and Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash. Edward Norton took on the role of Pete Seeger after Benedict Cumberbatch departed due to production delays.

Director James Mangold, speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, described the film as focusing on a specific moment rather than a comprehensive life story. Set in the early ’60s New York, the narrative revolves around a 17-year-old Dylan arriving in the city with little more than $16 in his pocket. He befriends Woody Guthrie in the hospital and gains support from Pete Seeger, ultimately immersing himself in the vibrant folk scene, where he encounters luminaries like Joan Baez.
