A devastating fire engulfed an apartment building in Valencia, Spain, leaving at least four people dead and up to 14 others missing. Jorge Suárez, the city’s deputy director of emergencies, revealed that firefighters faced challenges containing the blaze and were focused on cooling the building’s exterior due to its hazardous conditions, preventing them from entering the structure.
The blaze resulted in injuries to at least 14 individuals, most of whom were transported to local medical facilities. Tragically, bodies were discovered by firefighters utilizing drones. Among those injured were six firefighters, as reported by Valencia’s Emergency Services on social media.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Valencia to express solidarity with the city following the tragic incident. Speaking at the scene, Sánchez emphasized the importance of empathy and support for the victims and their families.
The fire, which broke out in the Campanar neighborhood around 5:30 p.m. local time, prompted the dispatch of 16 firefighting units. Firefighters are assessing the building’s stability to determine the risk of collapse.
Footage from the scene depicted the intense inferno tearing through the complex, with fire crews conducting dramatic rescues from balconies amid thick smoke.
The Valencia Mayor, María José Alcalá, urged residents to steer clear of the area to facilitate rescue efforts. Emergency services are arranging hotel accommodations for those displaced by the fire.
In response to the tragedy, three days of official mourning have been declared, with the mayor expressing profound condolences to the victims’ families and friends.
