On Tuesday, Facebook and Instagram experienced major issues worldwide. Users couldn’t log in, and feeds were stuck, causing frustration globally. The problem started around 3:30 pm GMT and lasted until about 5 pm, disrupting the services for many.
Meta, the parent company, acknowledged the problem on their latest social network, Threads, around 7 pm GMT. They stated that a technical glitch caused the difficulties and apologized for any inconvenience caused. The main issue seemed to be with Facebook login, affecting other services like Threads as well.
Interestingly, Google also faced login problems around the same time, hinting at a common underlying cause. This raised concerns, especially as it happened on Super Tuesday, a crucial day for US presidential primary elections. However, authorities didn’t find any connection to election interference or cyber-attacks.
Meta’s business status page showed disruptions across various services, with Facebook login and admin center experiencing major issues. Other platforms like WhatsApp seemed unaffected initially. Google reported disruptions to its Ad Manager service but managed to contain the impact better than Meta.
It’s likely that a systemic internet issue caused these outages, with some sporadic problems reported on other platforms like X and Microsoft Teams. Thankfully, the situation didn’t escalate to the level of Facebook’s 2021 outage caused by a configuration error, which took hours to resolve due to technical challenges.
