Newcastle United narrowly avoided a shocking FA Cup upset against Blackburn Rovers, thanks largely to the heroic efforts of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. The Premier League side, managed by Eddie Howe, had to rely on penalties to secure their spot in the quarter-finals after a tense 1-1 draw that extended into extra time.
The Magpies seemed poised for victory after Anthony Gordon’s late goal put them ahead, but a determined Blackburn side, led by Sammie Szomdics, managed to level the score, forcing the game into extra time. With Newcastle still searching for their first trophy since 1955, the importance of progressing in the FA Cup, especially considering their mid-table Premier League position, couldn’t be overstated.
Having suffered a heavy defeat to Arsenal just days before, Newcastle understood the gravity of the situation at Ewood Park and couldn’t afford any slip-ups. Both teams created numerous goal-scoring opportunities throughout the match, with standout performances from players like Tyrhys Dolan and Szmodics for Blackburn, and Sean Longstaff for Newcastle.
Gordon’s goal, assisted by Miguel Almiron, initially appeared to seal Newcastle’s passage to the quarter-finals, only for Szmodics to equalize shortly thereafter. Blackburn goalkeeper Aynsley Pears made several remarkable saves during extra time, including a crucial double stop to deny Gordon and Longstaff.
Ultimately, it was Dubravka’s heroics in the penalty shootout, saving two crucial penalties from Szmodics and Dominic Hyam, that ensured Newcastle’s progression in the tournament.
In another FA Cup fixture, Bournemouth faced off against high-flying Championship side Leicester City, with both teams unable to find a breakthrough in regular time. However, it was Leicester who emerged victorious in extra time, courtesy of a stunning goal from 19-year-old Abdul Fatawu.
Meanwhile, defending champions Manchester City secured their place in the quarter-finals with a commanding 6-2 victory over Luton Town. Erling Haaland stole the show with an incredible five-goal performance, further solidifying City’s status as one of the favorites to win the tournament.
Overall, it was a thrilling round of FA Cup action, filled with drama, upsets, and standout performances from some of football’s brightest talents.
